3 Ideas For Throwing
A Groundhog Day Party

Groundhog looking out over the snow on the ground.

Every year we turn to a groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil to tell us if we will have an early spring or a long winter. We have a 50% percent chance of getting an early spring, which is cause for a celebration. But we have a 50% chance of having six more weeks of winter?and we'll need a party to get us through that. That means February 2nd has a 100% chance of being a great day for a party. Here are 3 ideas for throwing a Groundhog Day party.

Dress Up

Throwing a costume party in February will get your guests out of their winter funk. Take a cue from the citizens of Punxsutawney, Pa, the groundhog capital of America. They go all out for Groundhog Day and dress up in top hats and tails to honor the day. Have your guests wear top hats if you want to keep it simple. For more outgoing guests, ask them to dress up as groundhogs. If your friends are creative and crafty, give them carte blanche to dress up for how they think the next six weeks will go?something either snowy for six more weeks of winter or sunny for an early spring.

Treats

There is no shortage of sweet ways to celebrate Groundhog Day?welcome spring or another six weeks of winter with a chocolate cupcake with green frosting, topped with a chocolate cookie in the shape of a groundhog; a cup of cocoa with whipped cream and green sprinkles, stirred with a chocolate groundhog; or a groundhog-shaped cookie popping out of a chocolate doughnut to represent Punxsutawney Phil popping out to check his shadow. Coming up with something savory might be more challenging, but you can use colors as your springboard?green for grass, brown for the ground, and white for snow. Guacamole, black bean dip, and white corn chips fit the bill nicely. Or, since it's February, warm up your guests with a chili buffet of green chili, black bean chili, and white bean chili.

Drinks

It's not a party without a good Groundhog Day-inspired cocktail! For pessimists who believe the weather is headed in the direction of six more weeks of winter, go with cocktails to keep you warm like an apple spiced bourbon toddy or a hot honey lemon with vodka. For optimists banking on an early spring, try The Sun Also Rises Cocktail that's full of citrus and sunshine, or stir things up with a Pimm's Cup to remind you of bright nights on breezy porches looking over your carefully curated DIY garden.

For people living in the northern hemisphere, February can be a tough month. Let The Lakeside Collection help you kick it off right and prepare for six more weeks of winter or an early spring.
