Fall Flowers To Brighten Your Garden | The Lakeside Collection

Fall Flowers To Brighten Your Garden

In just a few short months, winter will have us in its grips and there won't be much to remind us we once had a garden. But it's a good incentive to make the most of our gardens while we can. Even though summer is prime gardening time there are a few flowers to add color to our plots in the fall. Here are 6 fall flowers to brighten your garden this season.

Bluebeard

The wispy blue blossoms of drought-resistant Bluebeards bring color to the most colorless landscapes. But even in well-watered gardens, it's a lovely addition to break up the warm colors of fall. To bring out their best, plant them in well-drained soil and expect them to bloom starting in late summer. They do especially well in cooler climates. They also are deer resistant, a bonus if you live near wildlife.

Hydrangea

There aren't many fall flowers that can outshine the elegance of Hydrangeas. Their pom-poms are tough and exquisite in purple, red and pink, but they can take on colors to match your country kitchen if the pH of your soil is just right. These shrubs bloom through fall and like full sun, partial sun or full shade.

Aster

Aster is a charming flower that's sturdy yet delicate. It resembles a Black-Eyed Susan or a Daisy and stands out with its pink, purple, red, or white petals. No matter how big or small your garden is, Aster is a lovely addition as it comes in many sizes. It prefers cooler climates, well-drained soil and full or partial sun, and it's a favorite of butterflies.

Chrysanthemum

There are few fall flowers as dazzling and durable as Chrysanthemums (mums). You can find them in shapes and shades to fit any landscape, but for fall decor -- indoors and outdoors -- the reds and oranges make the arrangement. In a garden, they're strong and beautiful throughout the fall, but require deadheading and mulch just after the first frost. They also do well and look fabulous in containers, but they should be kept in a spot that gets full sun.

Buddleia

Butterflies flock to Buddleia, and it has been given the nickname "Butterfly Bush". It is a shrub that can fast grow to be up to 8 feet tall. It's also easy to care for, sturdy and resilient with graceful blossoms that give off a heavenly scent through the fall. They come in a variety of colors -- yellows, reds, pinks and purple. Buddleias like full sun and do well as borders, groundcover or in a container.

Blue Mist Shrub

Blue Mist Shrub (Caryopteris) is a low-maintenance beauty to add a little cool colors to your garden to break up all the reds and oranges of the season. Blue Mist is drought resistant and there aren't many bugs that bother it, and the ones it loves love it back! It's a bee magnet so it keeps the cycle of life moving from late summer through the fall.
