Crafts For The Whole Family
Summer time is family time, and every few years, "family time" means bringing your entire clan together. A family reunion is both a time to get to know your extended family, as well as make memories. Everyone needs a good souvenir to take away from family time, and the best way to make souvenirs special is by having family members get creative. Here are 5 crafts for the whole family.
Putting together key chains can be an easy activity; you can make it simple or it can be involved and intricate. If you used craft shrink plastic sheets as a kid, you will find they are still as easy to use as you remember. There are two ways you can turn these into a family reunion key chain: either pre-cut the shrink plastic into a shape to represent the family (first letter of your last name, a seashell, a heart, etc.) and decorate it, or you can have each individual cut out and decorate their own shapes. The only things you need other than the shrink plastic are key rings, markers for decorating, and a hole punch to attach the finished shapes to the key rings. The most difficult part about using the shrink plastic is that you have to turn on the oven during the summer, but it will be worth the extra heat when everyone has something fun to remember reunion weekend by.
This is a fun project, but you'll need to ask other members of your family to donate family photos (or color copies of family photos). To make them, you need flat translucent marbles (you can find them at craft stores), craft glue that dries clear, and magnet tape. Have each member of the family choose one or a few photos they want to make into magnets. Place the marble over the image, trace around it, cut out the photo, and coat it with craft glue before affixing the marble to it. Let it dry and cut magnet tape to fit behind the photo, and apply the magnet tape to the photo. They make adorable favors and, with the family touch, they'll remember the gathering every time they open the refrigerator.
Build A Family Tree
Creating a family tree is a fun way for kids to get to know everyone in the family and how everyone fits together. You'll need a picture of every family member. Have the kids get creative and put the photos on construction paper they can decorate and write the name of the family member on. Then, tie a string to it to hang on the tree. To make the tree, use sturdy sticks from the backyard and fasten them together to look like a tree with branches (smaller ones at the top) or you can buy wooden stakes and create something similar. Have the children hang the photos in generational order on the tree with grandparents at the top, parents in the middle, and children at the bottom. The kids will have fun putting everything together and bond over piecing together the family on the tree's many branches. If you want to make a two-dimensional tree, use a large piece of craft paper and draw a tree using a marker. Have everyone fill in the branches with their thumbprints (finger paint works) for leaves and blossoms, then ask them sign their names under their prints.
It may seem early to be thinking about Christmas, but crafting Christmas ornaments for a family reunion souvenir is a way to remind your family of your summer vacation when the holidays roll around. With air-dry modeling clay, you can prepare the ornaments in advance of the reunion. Choose a signature shape for the reunion that you can easily find a cookie cutter for. Just roll out the clay with a rolling pin, stamp it with a cookie cutter and use a drinking straw to cut out a hole for a ribbon to hang on the Christmas tree. When you get the family together, have them decorate the ornaments. If you want to make the idea more interesting, have everyone exchange ornaments to take home.
Using 4" x 4" tiles, you can create personalized coasters using family photos. Cut each photo to fit the coasters. Apply a coat of craft glue (the type that dries clear) on the tile and affix a photo. Apply a thin coat on top of the photo and let dry for an hour. Repeat this process two more times. For backing, apply felt circles with adhesive backs (the kind used under living room furniture legs to protect wood floors) on the tiles. It's a practical souvenir your family can take out every day or use on special occasions to remind them of the special people in their lives.
