Fresh Colors for Christmas:
Go Beyond Red and Green!
The holiday season is approaching, meaning it's time to get out your most festive decor to deck the halls, bells and holly included! The holidays are a season filled with ruby red ribbons and effervescent evergreen plants, which create a harmonious and festive atmosphere in your home. There are symbols and colors we expect at this time of year, but the festive nature of the holidays is an excuse to mix things up and take a chance with your decor! Decorating for the holidays doesn't have to be just red and green; there are many stunning color schemes that can warm up any room during the cold days of Christmas.
A holiday decor formula I find useful is to create a dual-, tri- or quad-tone theme by mixing between two and four of the following colors: red, green, gold, silver, white, blue, and purple. The ritual reds and greens keep holiday traditions alive, the metallics add excitement and flare, and the whites add a calming balance. Additionally, throwing in an icy blue or lilac purple is a blissful change of pace for a room's holiday color palette.
Combining these colors gives you a festive spirit without the predictability of your Grandma's Christmas decorations that she's used for the past 30 years. However, if you use my formula, any color scheme you choose is a guaranteed win. I do have a few holiday schemes that are must-haves for me every holiday season.
Simplicity often can be key, but that doesn't mean you have to stick to the traditional to create sophisticated and straightforward holiday decor. Think about your favorite colors, what you have and what you're tired of. A simply stunning color palette (and one of my favorites) is snow white with lilac purple. A beautiful white artificial tree (Yes, artificial trees ARE fabulous when done right!) garnished with resplendent lilac ornaments brightens a room without overpowering it. And you can be creative with the color. Purple is unique in that it combines both warm (red) and cool (blue) tones, which makes it versatile in a way red and green are not. If you want your decor to be on the cozy side, choose a shade that's slightly pink. For a cooler feel, lean toward the blue end of the spectrum. Whichever direction you choose to go, your tree will pop with purity and splendor.
My absolute favorite holiday color scheme includes light green, snow white, ice blue and silver. The green allows you to remain true to the season, and the blue and silver adds a sparkling briskness reminiscent of wintry snow scenes. There is no holiday sight more refreshing than a crisp Christmas tree decorated with dazzling white lights and topped off with an assortment of green, blue, and silver ornaments. If you really want to wow your guests and instantly get them into the Christmas spirit, have the color scheme of your tree's ornaments match the room's pillows, the stockings above the fireplace, and even the wrapping paper of the gifts beneath the tree. Your holiday decor will be an unrivaled success!
There's no rulebook that says you can only decorate with traditional holiday colors and ornaments. Be inventive with your holiday decor and redraw the lines of convention to create new customs. Staying true to tradition doesn't have to be boring.
