Got A Blank Wall?
Six Great Ideas To Give It Character
An empty wall is like a blank canvas. It's just waiting for you to come along and make it your own. Perhaps you've just moved into a new house or apartment. After you're done unpacking all the baby books and dishes, you're faced with the decision of what to do with all those empty walls. Here are 6 ideas to give it character.
1. Paint one wall.
Sometimes the solution to decorating dilemmas can be as easy as a simple coat of paint. Nothing else has such a dramatic impact on the look of a room. Take your cue from fabrics, flooring, or furniture, and pick out a color that ties everything together. Paint just that one blank wall and see how it livens up your space.
2. Display a collection.
Start by zeroing in on a theme that appeals to you, such as fashion, or puppies and kittens. Visit a pet store and take photos of the cutest critters to frame and hang, or take shots of your own pets and children. Select an oversized piece to serve as the focal point. A big fancy mirror could work for a fashion collection, or a large framed photo of your son and his dog for a pet-themed display. Surround the focal point with other related items.
3. Hang artwork.
Don't overlook the ease of decorating with beautiful prints, pictures and other wall art. And don't limit yourself to just buying wall art. If you're good with a camera, you can have a favorite photo enlarged and printed on canvas or fill a collage frame with a number of your best shots. You can also frame and hang needlepoint creations, or quilt a patchwork throw and hang it on the wall with a curtain rod.
4. Go vintage.
Scour resale or antique shops for vintage posters, signs and advertisements to frame and hang. Another great idea is to cut illustrations from vintage baby books and frame them for wall decor. Antique wall clocks, especially ones with a distressed finish, are simply bursting with character.
5. Use your wall for storage.
Mount shelves and fill them with items that express your personality, such as souvenirs from your travels, books you love, and little treasures handmade by your children. Hang pegboard on one kitchen wall to hold towels, potholders and cooking gadgets, or find an exceptional pot rack and turn a necessity into a decorative asset.
6. Try a wall decal.
Nothing adds character like a sweet sentiment or a quote from a famous person. Vinyl cling decals are available with a wide range of sayings and a number of stylish patterns. They're easy to put up, and you can remove them without damaging your wall. For kids' rooms, decals are available with images of their favorite characters.
