In The Spotlight: Designing Jewelry
For The Red Carpet
During my career as a jewelry designer, I've been invited to design original artistic pieces for some amazing events: The Grammys®, MTV Movie Awards, and Independent Spirit Film Awards, as well as charities like the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Whether it's for one of my regular collections or a one-of-a-kind custom design for a special celebrity client, my primary goal has never changed. I strive to make all women feel pretty, playful and feminine with a genuine sense of ease and comfort. When I can make that happen, I know I'm on the right path. And yet, designing for these special events isn't like anything else. There are some major differences and plenty of pressure.
The High Stakes Of High Fashion
The stakes are certainly higher when one of my clients is walking the red carpet on primetime TV. Millions of people are watching their every move. My jewelry is in the spotlight. While it's an absolute thrill for a boutique jewelry designer like me to see my designs on such a grand stage, it also can be a bit stressful. All I can do is hope the designs are worn and displayed properly. At this point, designers just cross their fingers and hope the jewelry stays secure. The pressure is even higher with earrings, especially if they're on a high-wattage performer dancing on stage.
Stylists And Backstage Showcases
Most awards shows and celebrity events seek out fashion and jewelry designers to help dress their red carpet-strutting celebrity clients. Stylists are often seeking limited-edition designs that will appeal to their celebrity client list. In addition to being sought out to provide jewelry for specific clients, I've also been fortunate enough to participate in backstage gift lounges at high-profile events like Jingle Ball and Fashion Rocks, where entertainers stop by in person to select products from curated designers. You can imagine what an honor it is to see A-listers remove diamond earrings to wear my jewelry instead.
Natural Elements, Next-Level Appeal
My designs are simple, combining feminine flair with modern accents. My most satisfying design work is a collaborative process between my surroundings and me. Inspiration is discovered in the design process. I love surrounding my workspace with the colors, shapes and textures found in nature. I strive to find ways to manipulate these natural elements to uncover new perspectives and create original pieces of jewelry. This original design aesthetic is what resonates with the celebrities who seek out my jewelry for everyday life or for the biggest events in their careers.
When it all comes together, and when the opportunity presents itself, the results are incredible. I get to see my jewelry featured on the red carpet, worn by celebrities like Alicia Keys, Beyoncé and Katie Holmes. I get to see my jewelry stride into the entertainment spotlight on personalities like Julianne Moore, Rihanna and Zoe Saldana. And the best part is that the jewelry I design for all these celebrities, like my EARSTRING Threader Earrings Collection, is available to everyone.
