Post-Holiday Shopping Tips
Now is the time to really take advantage of the post-holiday shopping slump. You can save on discounted holiday decorations, or even find great little gifts for next year. Whether you've got a pile of items to return, or you're stocking up for next year, here are some great tips to take advantage of the discounts and do your post-holiday shopping right.
Make a List
Now that you've decided to brave the stores again, despite Black Friday and holiday shopping trauma, your first step is to make a list. Do you need to stock up on winter clothes? What about late gifts? Make a detailed list of everything you need and who it is for.
There's no telling what's going to be left at any given store once January 1st rolls around. If you've got those specific items in mind, it's best to call ahead so you don't waste your time running from store to store for a sold-out Crock-Pot®. Many of the discount stores might not know what they have in the inventory, so be prepared to look hard and ask around.
Avoid Customer Service Desks
If you can, try not to bother with the customer service desk. If you have returns, you can bring them along, but there's a good chance you're going to want to wait to return them until the last possible day when the craziness has died down a bit.
Buy Holiday Items
A great way to save on next year's wrapping paper, ribbons, lights, and holiday decorations is to buy them at the end of the season. Go to your local stores and choose the ornaments, cards, seasonal kitchen decor, and other items that you know you'll use next year. You can often get 50-75% off many decorations just a few days after Christmas.
With a huge influx of returned items, stores are hoping to clear out their sweaters, boots, scarves, and hats in order to make room for the ahead-of-season spring clothing. Head over to the clearance section and you are likely to find really amazing deals on clothes you'd buy anyway! You can also find warm bedding on sale, and discount furniture as they prepare for more spring-related decor.
Be Prepared to Dig
And the number one, most important tip: be prepared to dig. With so much going on at stores (recovering from the shopping season, giving employees much-deserved time off, handling returns, and switching into different styles) many stores are a mess for the first couple weeks of January. Be prepared to dig for the sizes, styles, and colors you want. If you're willing to brave the apocalyptic environment that is post-holiday shopping, you've got to want it enough!
