Spring Forward: Organizing Your Kitchen For The New Season
The sun is coming out, and as we adjust to the warmer temperatures, our homes need to do some transitioning. Since the kitchen is one of the most used rooms in the house, it probably is in need of a refresh. Here's what you can do to organize your kitchen for the new season.
Start taking everything out of your refrigerator. Examine each item and check the expiration date. Dump anything that's no longer edible. For everything else, decide if you're actually going to use it again. If you give it a "maybe," throw it out. When all the food has been culled, wipe everything down and run any smaller pieces through the dishwasher. Do the same for your freezer: throw out anything you haven't touched in the last four months and anything that doesn't have a label.
Take everything out of your cabinets. While they may stay neat, things like flour and sugar create dust that can accumulate. Wipe out the insides and start purging all of the items you no longer use or aren't complete -- like plastic containers without lids. As you reassemble everything, think about small storage solutions like baskets and plastic containers to make stacking and re-organizing simple. When that's done, start re-stacking your dishes -- they tend to get out of sorts during the holidays and winter.
Like the cabinets, drawers tend to get cluttered over long stretches of time -- especially when utensils are involved. It's best to dump them out, wipe out the drawer and take out all of the gadgets you don't need anymore or things that don't have mates. You can either find a new home for each item or send them along to the thrift store. When you're done, you'll have a bit more space and room for new gadgets for grilling season.
We love to stock our pantries, but they need to be purged every so often. Start with your spices. Anything you can't remember using, throw out and only replace them when you need them again. Dump any open packages and items you know you haven't used in a while. Clear out the space for new storage alternatives or shelving solutions to keep things tidy throughout the spring and summer. When everything is ready to go back in, think of logical ways to sort your remaining items. Group items by size, by items you use together or even alphabetically. Having a system in place for grouping items in your cabinets keeps things neat and makes items more accessible while you cook.
