Summer Party Season Prep:
Tips for Outdoor Dining & More
One of the great pleasures of summer is getting friends and family together for outdoor gatherings. Whether you're planning a patio dinner party or a pool party luncheon, you want to make sure you have all the serving essentials and other items needed to make your outdoor dining experience one to remember long after summer fades into fall.
Summer Fun In The Moonlight
Great outdoor parties don't end when the sun goes down. Heck, some don't even get started until then! So have all the outdoor lighting you need, from extra patio lights to grill lights for BBQ prep after sundown. And don't neglect pest control. A couple of strategically placed bug zappers in the yard and some citronella candles placed here and there can significantly reduce the number of mosquitoes and other insects trying to crash the party.
Prepare For Bad Weather
Hopefully Mother Nature cooperates for your party, but if rain forces the crowd indoors, make sure you're ready with plenty of entertainment options. If it's an all-ages affair, have some kids' toys on hand and possibly some books for kids for the quieter youngsters attending. The grown-ups might also appreciate some games or maybe even a movie if the conversation starts to slow.
Go Big With The Snacks
You don't want to spend the whole party running back and forth to the kitchen to refill those platters of appetizers or bowls of chips and dip. There are many affordable containers made to hold large quantities of snacking favorites. Some even have under-trays for ice to keep deviled eggs or baked goods from losing their appeal in the unforgiving heat. If you're going the quick and simple route, offering snacks right out of the bag, don't forget bag clips to secure them shut.
Keep The Drinks Cool
You may serve chilled beverages straight from the fridge, but in the hot sun, ice melts quickly and that refreshing drink can quickly turn lukewarm and watery. Avoid this common pitfall by using insulated tumblers or cups with special freezer gel built in to keep the contents colder longer. If you're having too many party guests to provide enough of these special containers, then make sure you have a cooler full of ice nearby.
Serve Your Guests, Not The Pests!
Covering food for outdoor consumption seems like the most basic thing in the world. Yet too often we put presentation above protection, setting out the food for all to see clearly. Of course, bugs see it clearly as well. No matter how nice your display, nobody wants to eat food that pests have gotten to first. The obvious solution is clear, covered containers that let guests see the contents without inviting bugs to chow too. If these types of containers won't work for something on the menu, use a canopy or tent-styled covering and place a single serving nearby -- covered in plastic with a label -- so visitors know what's inside.
