The Great Outdoors
Independence Day is first and foremost a summer holiday. Backyard BBQs, community parades and firework displays are the order of the day. Almost everybody has the day off and we all look forward to spending it outdoors. To make the holiday more enjoyable, decorate your yard, patio, or even your home's exterior in a 4th of July theme.
Beyond the colors of the American flag, there's plenty of iconography to draw on as you create your patriotic presentation: Uncle Sam, bald eagles and, of course, stars and stripes. You can find all kinds of spirited decor and accent pieces featuring these instantly recognizable symbols. Summer weather can be unpredictable, so be sure to select items you can secure to withstand high winds and that won't get damaged in the rain.
The all-time favorite decoration is the classic red, white and blue bunting. You see it everywhere—on the parade grandstand, on the speaker's podium and even on used car lots. It's easy to hang and readily available. For your own home, drape plenty of these festive decorations of yesteryear from the eaves or along a porch railing or fence.
Your front lawn and backyard are great places to sprinkle 4th of July accents. A wide variety of patriotic garden statues, stakes and flags are readily available. All add color (specifically red, white and blue), some add motion and some add nighttime illumination. Perk up your outdoor space with the ones that you like best.
Use the large expanse of your garage door as a canvas for patriotic artwork. You'll make a big impression on guests arriving at your home—as well as anyone driving by—with a set of Americana magnets on the door of your garage. Repeat the theme at your front door with a welcome mat in an Independence Day design. They're practical, inexpensive and easy to find.
Carry The Theme Indoors
While most of the attention rightfully belongs outdoors, consider adding home accents that give your indoor space a holiday feeling, too. Patriotic decor items are perfect for end tables and shelves. Floral arrangements, photo frames and collectible statues are other options. Red, white and blue throw pillows are a quick and easy way to touch up the living room. An Americana tablecloth or a runner and placemat set is just what your dining room needs.
Although there might not be any special 4th of July kitchen gadgets that we know of, there are ways to bring the theme into your kitchen. Americana artwork can be had in the form of a magnetic panel that covers the front of your dishwasher. Inexpensive throw rugs in patriotic designs are another good idea. Kitchen towels, potholders and oven mitts are readily available in designs perfect for Independence Day and after.
